Clagett, Bowman, Brown and Wilson win Ladies and Lions

Sounds like the “Ladies and Lions” scramble Saturday at Lions Municipal Golf Course was a grand success: thirty-one teams of women competed, an impressive roster of notable figures in Austin golf attended and an eagle took flight on the par-4 16th hole — a place where countless hopes of a spring partnership title, a men’s city championship, a Firecracker Open trophy or career round on a Sunday morning have perished.

Marcia Macha, the event’s director, crafted a 5-wood shot from 150 yards that found the cup. I have no idea whether that was before or after Cindy Figg-Currier’s clinic, which included LPGA giants Sandra Haynie and Kathy Whitworth. Also unknown is whether Ben Crenshaw, Billy Clagett, General Marshall, Tinsley Penick or Bud Shrake witnessed the shot. They were there. But were they there?

Pam Clagett, Sally Bowman, Haley Brown and Kathy Wilson shot a 16-under-par 55 to win the scramble, organized to generate awareness for Save Muny and its campaign to protect Lions from potential development. Save Muny now is planning a junior tournament for June and a ‘summertime dedication of a Texas State Historical Marker at the course commemorating Muny’s recognition as the first golf course in the South to integrate.”

The Ladies Of Austin's Lions Municipal Golf Course

This weekend at Lions Municipal Golf Course, it’s the inaugural Ladies and Lions Golf Tournament and Clinic.

The event takes place Sat. March 21 beginning at noon. The clinic will be directed by Texas golf legend Cindy Figg-Currier and LPGA Hall of fame legend, Kathy Whitworth and Sandra Haynie. The event is part of the Save Muny program.

This morning I had the opportunity to watch a few participants preparing for this week’s tourney and I was extremely impressed.

I followed a group of 4 young women thru 4 holes. When I say young women, I mean women between the ages of 55-82.

Age is just a number and following this group it didn’t matter the score. However, it was competitive and fun golf. The way these ladies chipped and putted far exceeded my expectations. I was very impressed.

These women play at Lions every Wednesday and the camaraderie they have formed is unbreakable. They are all friends and appreciate each others talents. Their games and styles are different, but there are no boundaries and limitations of a handicap.

It's all about the love of golf and the love for the course, Lions Municipal. One woman said she had been playing at Lions for 7 years, another 12 years, and another 21 years.

And one woman shared the story of when her dad and brothers used to take her to the old Muny and let her play. She is now 73 years old and continues to play and I saw her sink a 60 foot putt for birdie this morning.

Since moving to Austin, I have always marveled at the Austin golf landscape. I see boys and girls and children of all ages playing this great game.

Until this morning, I really never identifed how important women's golf is here in Austin. After watching these women play, and listening to them share their stories, I have a greater appreciation for women who play golf.

Maybe more importantly, these women have a course they call home, Lions Municipal. They enjoy playing at the home course, which is being threatened to be destroyed.

Muny has provided them a place where they are at peace with friends and a golf ball. But as much as I would like to think Muny has had a profound impact on them, the Women of Muny have had a profound impact on it!
